2) Updated Housing Affordability Data
We have seen very slight upward movement in the housing 'affordability' across Canada with some regions becoming less affordable than others. Home ownership costs (which include financing, property taxes & utilities) increased in the first quarter faster than the median incomes during this same time.
Even though there has been a slight 'deterioration' of housing affordability in Canada, these levels are still very reasonable and well within acceptable levels to sustain the Real Estate price increases that we have been experiencing.
Housing Affordability Index (Q1 2006)
Detached Bungalow (a reasonable property benchmark for the housing market)
(RBC housing affordability index measures the proportion of median pre-tax household income required to service the cost of a mortgage, including principal and interest, property taxes and utilities on a detached bungalow. This measure is based on a 25% down-payment and a 25-year mortgage loan at a five-year fixed rate and is estimated on a quarterly basis. The higher the index, the more difficult it is to afford a house.)

A couple of key points to note- Certain regions in Canada have surpassed the Canadian housing price growth and still remain some of the most affordable places to live in Canada (Can you find which regions??).
